Sember Lockwood Hale, a multi media artist, spent 25 years working in the field of quilts. Although she is internationally known fir her quilts and has won numerous prizes for her design and workmanship, her true passion has been in the areas of painting and sculpture. In 1995 she began an intensive study of sculpture at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts in Minnesota with nationally known sculptor Heidi Hoy. Over the course of four years Sember not only sculpted, but also learned all phases of casting bronze, including the actual pouring of the bronze. Since that time she has sold her work in several states.
Throughout Lockwood Hale's life she has continued to explore the assorted styles and techniques of painting as a self-taught artist. Doing decorative painting on rugs, walls, and furniture has been the focus of her creative energy. Her most recent public works have been seen at The Physician's Offices at Resort Way in Ellsworth and as a participant in the 2004 Paddle Art Show at the Abbe Museum. As an artist, she looks to nature for inspiration and guidance in the use of color and fluidity of shape. Through her commissions, Lockwood Hale tries to bring her client's concepts into reality. When working on her own art, she examines the more philosophical aspects of Life seeking Truth and the quest for authentic expression.
