The Rest of the Story: Finishes, Hardware; Delivery & Shipping

Finishes

There are many choices in stains, oils and topcoats. Choosing the right finish is determined by design criteria, personal preference, and function. One of our favorites that we like to use is our own blended oil finish which uses polyurethane and boiled linseed oil on the furniture. This finish offers resistance to most liquids, replenishes the natural oils, and lets the wood patina age and color gracefully. It can also be repaired easily as opposed to clear chemical coatings.

Other finishes that we use are conversion varnish, lacquer, polyurethane and Brie wax. We discuss the options with the client pointing out the different results each finish produces. Many stain colors are available but we can also custom blend them or use a chemical process to age the knots in the wood to achieve special effects. If a customer prefers that we ship the piece unfinished, we can do that as well.

Hardware

We have many, many sources for hardware that can be used on a project – from authentic reproduction (Traditional, Mission, Art Nouveau, etc.); ultramodern (Contemporary,Italian, Scandinavian, etc.);

even hand-forged (which looks great on our Rustic Furniture). The piece itself will direct us to some choices based on function. We will show several selections to a customer because personal preference will also come into play. One thing we do not skimp on is quality hardware. Nothing is more frustrating than poor-functioning or breaking hardware. Generally, there is a hardware allowance built-in to the contract that will cover the hardware's cost, shipping of the hardware and taxes, if any.

Delivery / Shipping

A great deal of our work is shipped out of state so we have developed methods to insure the furniture arrives unharmed. We carefully inspect the piece, wrap it in a protective covering such as bubble wrap, and then carton or crate it. If the furniture

is going by common carrier it is usually put on a pallet. The customer receiving the shipment should not sign off on the delivery until the carton or crate has been inspected carefully for any dents, tears, crushed corners or any noticeable damage to the packaging. If there is damage, this should be noted on the driver’s Shipping Bill and he must sign & date it too. Usually, a common carrier driver or a UPS driver won’t let the customer open the container until the shipping bill is paid and signed off. So it is very important that the carton/crate is inspected carefully and that the driver signs off & dates whatever damage is noticed. Ninety nine percent of our product is shipped without a hitch!

*Please Note: A common carrier's price is only for a curbside drop off. If you wish for the shipment to be unpacked and brought into your home/office, additional arrangements must be made.

Shipping Close to the Studio

If the client’s delivery location is within 100 miles of our studio, KBS will make the delivery. The delivery cost will vary due to distance, location, size of furniture, and the number of people needed to make the delivery. Built-in cabinetry will more than likely be delivered and installed by Kristian Brunsdale. Since KBS does not always see the location prior to delivery, it is the customer’s responsibility to make sure the furniture will fit into the dwelling and that proper access is given for the delivery location on the date it will be received. We will not take the responsibility of moving any household furnishings to make the delivery.
